We decided to feed these Oxen specifically for the Bathurst Agricultural Show and for the enjoyment of feeding. Please read further to see their intake of Food and the Cost involved of feeding animals.
They arrived with us on the 16 November 2015 weighing in at 880kg over the Weighbridge.
We Started off feeding them a 15% Protein Pellet supplied by Nova Feeds for the first 60 Days, this is the Same Ration that we give our Dairy Heifers that are Standing in Isolation for Export.
This is a Combined Ration for Both Oxen keeping in mind that a Continues supply of Rhodes Bales was made available for them at all times.
Divide by 2 for individual cost and intake. This should give you a new found respect for our Farmers that have to feed their animals………………
Day 1 to Day 30 = 25 kg of OFK 15% (Nova Feeds mix)
Day 30 to Day 60 = 50kg of OFK 15% (Nova Feeds Mix)
Day 60 to Day 90 we added 25kg of Straight Run (Milled Maze)
Day 90 to Day 138 Feed was increased to 50kg of 15% and 50kg of Maize

18 Bales @ 250kg/Bale

Now take into account our Purchase price of R28000.00 for the two oxen.
TOTAL EXPENDITURE: R70744.00
Break-even: R35372.00 each to cover cost.
